Renewing Your PALS Certification
You need to have your PALS certification renewed periodically. This is for two reasons. First, the American Academy of Pediatrics sometimes changes its recommendations and procedures. Scientists and medical practitioners are always making new discoveries about how the human body works, and some of these discoveries translate into new insights about the best way to handle medical emergencies. Therefore the procedures are changed to reflect our new knowledge and new best practices.
Second, human nature causes us to have a fight, flight, or freeze response in an emergency situation. Some people (most likely the panicking parents) may become belligerent and begin to yell angrily at people around for not helping their child in distress. Many untrained people will stand around an emergency situation and not be sure what to do. You need to be the one who has practiced acting in these emergency situations so that you can calmly start doing the rescue treatment that you have been trained to do. Practicing these techniques every year will help to keep them fresh in your brain, so that when an emergency arises you will know exactly what to do.
